Our policy priorities for Europe’s green industrial transition
As Europe’s industries undergo transformation, the European Union is building a robust regulatory framework to meet the challenges of decarbonisation, competitiveness, energy affordability and security of supply.
Policy initiatives such as the EU Grids Package, Electrification Action Plan, the Electricity Market Design, and the Strategic Roadmap for Digitalisation and AI for the Energy Sector, are designed to future-proof Europe’s energy system and ensure that industrial competitiveness goes hand-in-hand with climate ambition.
At GIGA, we aim to unite forward-looking industrial energy users and grid technology innovators to help make these policy discussions a success. We advocate for four key priorities that are critical to unlocking Europe’s energy future:
1. Grids planning for tomorrow
Stronger coordination with demand-side consumers to ensure grid build-out happens where it is most needed, while simultaneously providing long-term visibility for component suppliers and reducing supply-chain bottlenecks.
2. Unlocking capital for grid expansion and modernisation
Mobilising third-party financing to deliver long-term affordable grid expansion and modernise existing infrastructure.
2. Unlocking Capital for Grid Expansion and Modernisation
Mobilising third-party financing to deliver long-term affordable grid expansion and modernise existing infrastructure.
3. Maximising and strengthening the existing grid
Deploying technological solutions such as Grid Enhancing Technologies (GETs), non-wire solutions and targeted incentives to increase efficiency and reliability of the system.
4. Accelerating access to power
Reforming grid access policy aligned with strategic goals to allocate capacity based on project maturity, improve application processing and increase transparency, as well as deploying all available solutions such as third-party delivery, flexible connection agreements and ramped connections.
4. Accelerating Access to Power
Reforming grid access policy aligned with strategic goals to allocate capacity based on project maturity, improve application processing and increase transparency, as well as deploying all available solutions such as third-party delivery, flexible connection agreements and ramped connections.
What we are doing
GIGA acts as a unified voice for industrial electricity consumers, helping to ensure that Europe’s grid infrastructure is ready to support industrial growth, electrification, digital innovation and decarbonisation. Our members are committed to supporting the EU’s mission to build a secure, sustainable, and competitive energy future, and we stand ready to partner with policymakers and stakeholders at EU and national level.
Our position on the Grids Package
Europe’s energy transition depends on robust grids. The European Grids Package is a crucial step forward – but GIGA believes it must go even further. Discover how, together, we can transform bottlenecks into backbones to accelerate electrification and secure Europe’s industrial competitiveness.
